What is CBD (Cannabidiol)?

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, has been gaining popularity at lightning speed. It is one of the most studied compounds found within the cannabis plant due to its purported medical benefits for a variety of health conditions. Although CBD acts as an essential component in medical marijuana, our CBD isolate is derived directly from organically-grown hemp plants, a close relative of the marijuana plant.

What is the difference between THC and CBD?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC, is the mind-altering psychoactive component of marijuana and according to the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA) can lead to negative health effects such as: hallucinations and paranoia, breathing problems, and possible harm to a fetus's brain in pregnant women. [1]

Cannabinoids such as CBD can be extracted from either cannabis or the hemp plant and are chemically similar to THC, however this particular variant will not make people "high." According to NIDA, "it may be useful in reducing pain and inflammation, controlling epileptic seizures, and possibly even treating mental illness and addictions." The FDA has even approved a recent prescription drug Epidiolex® for the treatment of two forms of severe childhood epilepsy, Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Our product contains the same active ingredient as Epidiolex®, the CBD isolate.

Is CBD Legal? Should I be worried about drug tests?

The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to sell hemp and hemp-derived products in the United States, although specific legislation may vary from state to state. Our CBD isolate is derived from organic hemp in the United States and purified and verified by third party testing to ensure the highest quality products and no THC is detected in our samples.

How do I find the best CBD Oils in San Diego?

With the craze of this CBD movement, you can find cannabis products everywhere from food products like edibles to vapes, creams, and gummies.  From smoke shops, dispensaries, to specialized online retailers, there are a ton of choices and it is hard to decide if sources are reputable or which products will work for you.  Not all CBD products are created equal. A recent review article from The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) founded that of their samples of CBD products purchased online, "26% contained less CBD than labeled," some of which "negligible or less than 1% of the labeled content." [2] Although lower CBD content may be less of a safety concern, they study found something more concerning. Companies claim to have the legal <0.3% THC amount, however when tested, "the THC content observed may be sufficient to produce intoxication or impairment, especially among children."

We take the highest quality ingredients and compound them in small batches in our pharmacy to ensure the highest possible results, and re-test each batch and supply QR codes to third party verification. We are not a dispensary, we are medical professionals who can ensure the best results and formulations.

Why not Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum? Why Isolate?

The simple answer is the consistency and our targeted approach. Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum potentially contains over 100 different compounds derived from hemp, including different cannabinoids, terpenes, chlorophylls, and plant derivatives, many of which have not been clinically studied for their physiological effects on the body.

When you purchase our CBD products, we only use the isolate so you know exactly how much CBD you are receiving, and then we add terpenes and supporting ingredients with clinically-backed research to create a targeted approach for your needs. In comparison to Full and Broad Spectrum, CBD Isolate has clinical studies that support its usage and our recommendations, and has studies demonstrating its physiological drug interactions, side effect profiles, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects in the body.

Plenty of unethical companies are jumping on the bandwagon, and not thinking of their patients first.  As one of America’s biggest producers, John Merritt, explains:

“It’s common to find cheap CBD products, watered down with labels claiming it is high strength, however most cheap CBD oil comes from untested products with little to no CBD content.”

Our products are made by clinical professionals, and we believe in the targeted approach. In our opinion, more compounds is not better.

The very best CBD is made in the US and is gently extracted to preserve all the beneficial properties which are naturally present but stripped out by the harsher, industrial extraction used in cheaper products.

At TRU Leaf Labs, it is our goal to bring to our customers CBD products of the highest quality. We follow each ingredient (grown in USA) from seed to shelf and all products are manufactured on-premises by our staff of medical professionals. We conducted extensive research to formulate our proprietary blended CBD products with unique ingredients that encourage the best absorption possible. All of our products are third party tested and reviewed to the highest standard. What is written on the label is exactly what you get.

As more research develops, and CBD’s popularity continues to grow, stay knowledgeable.
